saturday

i'd like to title this post 'sunny saturday' but alas it is not. i only hope that it doesn't rain (much. yet.) so that you can check out my new treats for you!

i have more softheads by Ferdinand. a softhead is a handmade stuffed animal head. who needs the body when the cute part is the facial expression? you'll just have to see these in person. they are near the Ferdinand baby tees and onesies, the first of the new baby products at the shop. they're printed on organic cotton and i have two designs, one involving a musical squirrel.

there is also a new line of candles called Beccalights. kristen was gracious enough to let me be the first store to carry her line! they come in little metal tins and i have eight scents, from sugary Caramel to fresh, clean Cotton. and i have the famous Baked Bread scent. yes, it really does smell like that and no, i don't know how.

this of course derails the conversation to when i used to be a Web monkey and worked at a startup that wanted to let you "smell" webpages. no kidding! they had a little box filled with oils that got mixed and blown at you by a little fan, you plugged this into your computer and when you hit a page with, say, a pizza ad, you smelled pizza. kooky.

finally, miss sue of Giant Dwarf has sent a box of treats - sweet cloches and calf cozies - or legwarmers to you oldsters. they are made of recycled sweaters and you just wouldn't have guessed unless i told you. oops, the secret is out.

mm/mg

millimeter/milligram goods from Seoul have landed. That was fast! They seem to design everything, but here are some of the things I picked for you: standup any-date desk calendars, hologram covers for you to put plain boring notebooks into, silver antiqued leather passport cases (silver! leather!), sky blue leather pencil cases, and widgets for you to wind your earphone cords around. All of it cute as a button and amazingly packaged, of course.

NEWS! The date for the party has been set, it's November 17, and I hope you can come. There will be beverages and snackfoods. My second cousin once removed (or something) may even bake some treats. The shindig runs from 5-9pm and we will donate part of the night's sales to 826NYC (www.826nyc.org) who provides free tutoring to students on their writing skills. Not to mention the whole superhero supply shop thing. I am encouraging all the local designers who make things for Rare Device to be there to be admired!

And then there's the News news. The NY Times announced our store opening. We were totally shocked...and right there you can see I'm really from California. Sorry about that!

Guest Host

Since the weather is nice, if you visit the shop this week, you might find Ms. Mia Dog presiding behind the counter. Or possibly sleeping under the new table right in the middle of the floor. While it's no surprise that I will be stocking some baby items soon, I am also contemplating dog beds for your furry child. The shop is running out of space, though!

I'm going to bring in more Bloom Bags, brand-new styles. They are made of the same supersoft stain-resistant nylon but have super embroidery on them - an orange autumn leaf on a deep brown-black bag. I have a large bag that looks like it could hold a laptop, and a small wristlet that nonetheless has credit card and phone organizer pockets inside. It is a great little bag.

I also have some totes from I'm Smitten with the famous antler girl print on the side. Great to put your library books in, or your lunch, or a stack of magazines.

Scarves soon I hope! The weather is just at the point here in NY where you can wear a scarf for fashion or for warmth.

And an addendum: congrats to Eleventwentyfive, their pillows are on Daily Candy - and they like Amy Ruppel's owl pillows, as do we.
